Description
The sparkling facets and glorious colours of the andesine beads used in this necklace called for something understated yet special that played on their rather ancient-looking uneven and raw quality. The result is this simultaneously simple yet extravagant long graduated necklace accented throughout with matte and shiny nuggets of 24k gold plated Balinese sterling silver (vermeil). Closure is via a delicate matte vermeil extender clasp with a tassel of beads adding to the slightly boho, unstructured feeling to the piece.
Andesine is a relatively new gemstone to the jewellery industry even though it was first discovered in Colombia in the 1840s. It is a plagioclase feldspar mineral just like the ever-popular labradorite and is sometimes referred to as Red Labradorite or Yellow labradorite. It is also sometimes marketed as Tibetan Sunstone owing to recent discoveries in Tibet and to its close resemblance and similar geology to sunstone. Whatever, it is a beautiful stone often showing some colour change from orange red to a soft, subtle green. Several beads in this necklace – which are all natural – show this unusual and delightful colouration.
Wear it long in a single strand or doubled for maximum impact.
